Moving the Body in Virtual Reality

MOVING THE BODY IN VIRTUAL REALITY
A workshop/demo/presentation

This workshop draws from the knowledge and experience of presenting Extending the body v.1 & Extending the Body v.2, a live-streamed performance of embodied improvisation in a VR painting program and subsequent paper, Extending the Body: An Embodied Practice as Choreography in Virtual Reality Performance (June 2022). Additionally, prior research in Virtual Reality (VR)/Augmented Reality (AR) environments include the creation of Bubble Room & Bubble Push during Snap Inc’s Spectacles Creator Program with their not-yet released AR glasses; moonshot: solos for your home, an app for your phone of an augmented reality performance that re-imagines a dancer’s body as fluctuating, transparent, polygons using animation and motion capture, and co-creating Digging AR, a prototype for the phone that brings Brenda Dixon Gottschild’s book Digging the Africanist Presence in American Performance: Dance and Other Contexts to life through Augmented Reality. Each of these projects draws from the technological skill-set used to build this new VR world while also creating a springboard that informs the body’s movement in the VR environment.
